Lost in text patterns...

Howdy All-

I am new to text pattern and what little I have up and running now on my site is all thanks to the helpful folks at textdrive.com — can anyone please point me to a resource, faq and 1st step in learning how to customize my textpattern driven web log? Any helpful threads to read or links? Does customization (adding background images, adding archives) require learning CSS? I am familiar with html and flash so I think I can handle learning it if so. Any advice is appreciated.
