Community site with TXP?

Hi,
I am planning on creating a site that allows users to:
• register
• create an account
• upload a profile pic and some info and start networking with other members, including sending private messages.

One other feature should be that people can search members by zip code.

I read a couple of articles here and found some useful plug-ins such as mem_self_register, mem_moderation and ign_password_protect.

My question is, if it is posible to realize this functunality or should I go with a different CMS. If so, which one would be best for this endeavor? I really like textpattern and use it on a couple of sites, as it is so logical in structure and very lean and clean.

Any advice very appreciated.

Thank you community!
Dada

Re: Community site with TXP?

It sounds like you would be better off with something like Drupal, which going to provide the features you need right out of the box. You can do what you want with Textpattern, but it will require the plug-ins you mentioned and it will be harder to setup and maintain.

Downside to that, (in my opinion) Drupal is much harder to learn, use, and customize the way you would probably want to. I think both will serve you well though. Are you already pretty familiar with PHP and the like?

Re: Community site with TXP?

I have a problem somewhat similar to dada78’s: Read this.

Why would it be harder to maintain, DigitalRealm?

Re: Community site with TXP?

I have personally not set up a TXP site to handle what you are talking about, however I do know of someone that is using it to do just what you are looking to do.

He is using the ign_password_protect plug-in to secure the entire site. He then manages them by giving them different levels so certain people see certain files and others (with lower levels) do not. It requires that they be set up as a user in TXP and the control is really good.

Is that more of what you are looking to do?

Re: Community site with TXP?

Thanks guys! I just installed Drupal for this purpose and it seems to have all the options and modules I am looking for and will give it a try, although it requires some getting used to…

Re: Community site with TXP?

Drupal is a little weird to set up and get used to but once you get your feet wet, it is a pretty powerful system.

Re: Community site with TXP?

Dada,

Sounds like you need a Forum, rather than a CMS for what you’re trying to do.

Re: Community site with TXP?

I was thinking the same thing hcgtv, a forum may be more in line with what he is looking for.

Re: Community site with TXP?

Thanks guys.

I am not sure if a forum will suffice, as I would like members to create a profile page that other members can see, create events that are accessible over a calendar and also have an internal messaging system.
I think I didn’t mention that before.

Anyway, I will give Drupal a try.

Thanks for all your responses!

Re: Community site with TXP?

Vanilla Forum has somewhat more customizable profile pages.
