*SOLVED! Why is my site so @#!*& slow.

OK, DO NOT use the nested CSS technique I described here It’ll slow down you site to a crawl. I’ll let other wiser people explain why, I’ve used this technique before outside of TXP without penalty, but I learned the hard way that this is not a great idea… Better to use mcw_templates if you want to edit your css with less scrolling around.

So I created a site I’m very pleased with. See for yourself at Diversity Coalition Lots of functionality. I’m hosted at textdrive which I’m ecstatic about. But it’s a real dog in terms of speed, Any thoughts?

Late 4.03 (1300ish) using a few plugins for Calendar, Live archive, categories, etc. I can post a lot more information and diagnostics, but I thought I might just make my post breif to see if I have committed any obvious stupidity.

[Edit Later] to show wildly different result, Como?

Set the site status to “testing” and show us the summary at the bottom of the page (look at the HTML source).

You should start by reading this carefully:

http://textpattern.com/faq/136/diagnosing-performance-problems

It should give you an idea on how to narrow where the problem is coming from, and a couple options you can try to improve the situation.

Re: *SOLVED! Why is my site so @#!*& slow.

Those are quite a few queries on the front page, but the site is fast for me (@1.5mbps). Try disabling the calendar plugin, or some of the others to see if there’s any difference.

edit: Speed results

Re: *SOLVED! Why is my site so @#!*& slow.

I tried it on dialup and the entire page including all graphics was done in 19 seconds – the text was down in less than 10-12 seconds. I don’t consider that slow.

OK, the speed issue is sporadic and perhaps localized. I’m investigating it with a TXD ticket. Thanks to Sencer for pointing me at the FAQ (doh!) and everyone else who helped.

Re: *SOLVED! Why is my site so @#!*& slow.

Do let us know what the outcome is… I’m seeing similar performance problems with a website hosted there.
Because most of the time seems to get lost in doing the MySQL query, perhaps a caching plugin helps.

edit… I currently see this on your website:

<!— Runtime: 7.9786 —>
<!— Query time: 5.89134 —>
<!— Queries: 47 —>
<!— Memory: 3676Kb, end of textpattern() —>

What exactly indicates this? the query number?

Re: *SOLVED! Why is my site so @#!*& slow.

Queries = the number of times Textpattern (or a plugin, more likely) is asking the database (MySQL) for some information.
Query time = the total time all these queries consume.

What generates queries: each time you use a form on a page, article lists, individual articles, link lists, category lists and such, textpattern (or plugins) has to retrieve some information that is stored in the database.

Textpattern itself tends to be quite efficient in doing this. Some plugins can be a bit less efficient and can often be optimized to perform better. Some extreme examples: a page that took 1200 (!) queries due to inefficient plugins could be optimized to use only 49 queries. And an even bigger page used 5000 queries which could be reduced to 112.

Re: *SOLVED! Why is my site so @#!*& slow.

So I’ve come to the conclusion that my speed issues are not textpattern related. Most of my numbers seem to be in the vicinity of slim.

We’ll see what TXD says…

Re: *SOLVED! Why is my site so @#!*& slow.

I’d be curious to know if this wouldn’t be resolved in 4.0.4 by turning on “send Last Modified headers”.
