Custom fields are the way to go.
The event manager is of course very relevant and the glx_countdown is also a good plugin to mark individual posts as expired/whatever.

Instead of having ‘future’ dates you can have the current posted date and then use the glx_countdown… The problem which I am facing too is that I am keeping the past events posts in the database which means that every time an event passes I have to manually move the post in the archives section.

I do not know exactly what it is you are trying to achieve but if it is for a client I would think that it is an idiot proof methodology of adding new posts and removing expired ones.
