Include article headings and excerpts on front page

Hi – I have a section called “News” and it is set not to display on the front page.

I would however like to show the latest news headlines on the front page – how do I do that?

The wierd thing is – I used article_custom earlier this week and it didn’t even cross my mind to use it for this – doh :)
