the latest : liberti.org

Well its official: I’m a pansy. I don’t really care to show my designs or let anyone who knows anything see my code! Cuz I know there are things that need to be fixed, but that’s just a terrible way to live, so hey, here it is:

Matthew, you probably invented the profession of the “CSS standup comedian”:

/*2nd menu, put your hands up*/

I have to rethink the way I structure and comment my style sheets…

Re: the latest : liberti.org

lol,
I love the changing images, it makes the page look intresting even when looking at it for awhile, but the drop downs need to go, because they cause more pain then good.

Re: the latest : liberti.org

pain huh?
what kind of pain?
And do you have anything more constructive? like, use this instead… or have you tried…
clearly you are good at diagnosing… :)

Re: the latest : liberti.org

Drop downs = bad usability wise. But that’s just my bias, I’ve spent the past 3 years trying to get rid of drop dows at my job.

They provide too many options at once and don’t tend to give you any real indication of where you are navigation wise. The motor skill required can be a challenge too.

Also if you are using display:none or something like that to hide the submenus screen readers like Jaws will not show the submenus (even thought they should).

This is just in general not specific to your implementation. I actually think they way you are using them is pretty good.

Re: the latest : liberti.org

Hak,
hey good to hear from you.
I struggled quite a bit about implementing dropdowns, and weighed benefits against problems, and our audience.
Ultimately I found that while I love usability and accessibility, I struggle with the idea that we are working from the
lowest common denomenator.

Dropdowns, while they aren’t the best design pattern for menu usability, are among a few standard practices that
people are not unused to seeing and using (especially if they are implemented correctly).

In the end, I had some other ideas, but the people on my team for this project turned them down and we went with
the dropdowns… yet another reality of this business… I rarely work in a vacuum.

:)

Thanks for the feedback, good to think about.

Ahh if only we got to make all the decisions.

Oh my redesign of UVa Health System launched. And it still has drop downs as much as I wanted to get rid of them. Not Textpattern but I did write the CMS :) Try resizing the text. It’s supposed to be almost fully elastic.

Hmm weird works for me. I wonder if it’s some DNS propagation issue. Try this one

Re: the latest : liberti.org

Viewing here in FF, the two left select boxes extend about 50px beyond the bordered space on the left. The page text resizes nicely though.

Re: the latest : liberti.org

Ohh thanks for catching that. I think it’s a new FF 2.0 issue. 1.5 seems to be ok.

Back to Matthew’s excellent design though since his is actually TXP.

Edit: It is definitely an issue introduced with FF 2.0. They added a default minimum font-size of 11px in FF 2.0 which seems kind of high. Just in case anyone else runs into this. I’m not sure what the best way to handle it is yet.

Apparently it’s only 11 on OS X it’s 10 on windows. Ugh.
