Markup: posting code, etc on this forum

The forum is running Textile, specifically, a restricted version of Textile, for parsing posts and user signatures. What follows is a quick explanation of what this means, and what using the restricted version means, in particular.

  • At the bottom of every post textarea is a link to the Textile homepage, as well as a quick reference of a couple commonly used snippets, which can be shown/revealed by clicking the “Quick Help” link.
  • At the Textile homepage, you can find short documentation – more in-depth is coming soon – testing and bug report ability. Please report any bugs you find with Textile there.
  • You will no longer be able to include HTML (be it by intention or accident, but it is usually the latter): tags will be escaped and displayed, rather than rendered by your browser. This will make things much easier for the Textile or forum newbie, as well as the moderators (No more editing posts to correct code postings!)
  • Certain aspects of inline Textile will no longer be available for use, specifically classes and style: they will also be escape and displayed. This is for legitimate security reasons.
  • For those familiar with older versions of Textile: pre and code no longer do what you think they do. You now have a much cleaner and simpler “bc” syntax (bc = “block code”) available to you.
  • For those used to BBCode on other forums, that does not work here. Never has, but it’s probably a good idea to say it again.

Regular Textile, as used by Textpattern for formatting articles, is much more permissive because the user is trusted to do what they want with their own site. A forum is rather open to input from anyone, so it is advisable to take the aformentioned precautions to protect both the site and the user.

We had a couple bugs at first, but everything seems to work smoothly now. Please let me know if you have any further issues.
