sub and chemical formulas

I’m just working at a website where the articles containing many chemical formulas. To display these correctly you need the sub-HMTL-element: O2 . In Textile it is called by ~. But to get it work there must be whitespaces before the ~ so result would be O 2

I think it is possible to hack the classTextile.php. But IMO it would also affect other elements like strong, cite, del etc. Would this cause serious problems?
