Email: article author
I see this kind of thing being asked for a lot, so I’ve started work on a plugin to support this properly. Now’s the time to state what kind of features are wanted.
Thus far, I’ve got it so that you can display the email address of either the present article’s author, the present article’s custom field (you can state which custom field to use), or pass an arbitrary author name. It will give the option of three types of display: plain (unaltered, “naked” – not really recommended but available as an option), encoded (as if you were using the built-in email tag) or “visible” meaning it would turn someone@somewhere.com into “someone at somewhere dot com”. It also supports wraptag and class attributes.
Is there anything else it should do or offer?

Re: Email: article author
Hello Mary,
FYI, the sed_pcf plugin has been able to do this (use custom field values for some native tag attributes, specifically the email tag) for some time now. It can use custom fields for images and thumbnails too — and there is code in place that should allow it to be extended to other tags quite easily.

Re: Email: article author
Mary,
I see this as part of a much bigger picture of needs, though something not all that hard to build on from what you and someone like Wilshire have accomplished already.
That being better author support on the whole.
ie:
- tags for showing: (at the least)
current article’s author
current article’s author image
current article’s author’s bio
current article’s author email
The work you did for me to allow for a profiles page comes very close to this, but if it were a true plugin, this might be even easier, and more functional to use for both user and designer/builder.
I see the profile tab (admin side) existing similarly to the one you set up for me, only with the possibility of uploading an avatar more freely. ie: if permission exists to set profile then permission exists to upload avatar with an automatic category of author_img handed to that img, with a height and width getting set somewhere in site admin prefs? (in a very happy world)
However, you may not be asking for any of these ideas :) in which case I’ll go away now :)
I like Net-Carver’s plugin, but I prefer the idea of fetching the email address dynamically, which net-carver’s plugin does not do, unless I am sorely mistaken :)
For what its worth,
Matthew

Re: Email: article author
I would add
- role (either the TXP one or a custom defined one, like “Weekly Columnist”). I’m using custom fields for a current multi-author project to get this functionality.
- url – author’s site
Thanks for filling the request!
