Serving alt css for Win/IE & FF

How do I go about serving alternative css for IE? And/or firefox?

The problem I am encountering is that Win/IE6 and FF are making my top navigation bar run over on to 2 decks. I’d like it to stay on one. I guess I can reduce the type size of the nav bar but I’d like it to fill out most of the width on most browsers/OS.

See what I mean here
(If you’re viewing on WinIE 6 or WinFF 1.5 or 2 you should see the top navigation bar breaking out over 2 lines….I think)

Can I use something conditional in my css to decrease the type size in my nav bar enough for WinIE/FF… but leave it as it is for other ie Mac FF/Saf etc….?

Thanks if you can enlighten me on this…. : )

[I realise I shd have posted this in the Presentation forum..but can’t seem to delete it to repost…sorry!]

Re: Serving alt css for Win/IE & FF

You can use IE conditionals to specify a different stylesheet for IE by using the following structure and inserting the appropriate stylings.

<code>
<!—[if IE]> <style type=“text/css”> </style>
<![endif]—>
</code>
<br />

The difference between Firefox for Mac and Firefox for windows is a different problem and one I have not seen before. Do you have the default font set the same in both browsers? The only solution to this I can see would be to do some browser detection and serve the appropriate css based on that.

You are trying to pack a lot of text into a fixed width. To fit the whole menu on one line I had to reduce the font size to 9px, which is about as small as is readably useful for someone with good eyesight and a decent monitor, and it still wrapped the last menu item to the next line in Firefox. You could also try reducing the horizontal padding on the menu items slightly, rename the first menu item About, rename the last menu item (eg RD Trust or Trust), or move it to the side menu.

Thanks NyteOwl.
Good advice.
I’ll see if I can be less verbose in the nav bar, and reduce padding.
