Code snippets and url links
Hi,
Over the course of the last few months, I’ve come to the conclusion that trying to force users to get used to the nuances of this forum is a bit counter productive.
Code snippets are by far the hardest thing for a user to grasp, makes it very hard to help users who are familiar with bbcode but relative newbies to Textile. Don’t get me wrong I’ve grown to love Textile on my sites but I think it’s out of place on a forum, at least until you’re accustomed to it.
User entered url links are almost always just plain text, we have to copy, open up a new tab and paste the url to see what they are having a problem with. PunBB has an option to turn urls into links, does this option interfere with something else?
Could Textile markup be on a per user basis, new users default to bbcode and then can move to Textile on their own choosing? Or is it and either or type of situation?

- Either/or.
- Don’t think I don’t know or understand. :/ :(
- Gone over many, many times here. I get the feeling I would be squashed beyond recognition if I tampered. – Doesn’t mean I won’t try and do something about it… function, and not popularity, is my goal. ;) I’m in the process of working something out.

Re: Code snippets and url links
99% of forums on the web use BBCode. I’m all for being unique but … why does it have to be either/or?
The forum on TextDrive.com is punBB and it uses both Textile and BBCode (though unlike here it doesn’t permit html)

Hi.
Maybe something like this can be added to the forum?
How to paste arbitrary code?

Re: Code snippets and url links
maniqui’s suggestion might be a good solution. I’m a textile supporter myself as this is a textpattern forum. textdrive uses bbcode as it is catering for another audience.
@NyteOwl thanks for the htaccess suggestion. I hope it’ll solve our problem over at our forum
