Admin Password Problem

Hi,

I successfully set up TxP on MAMP to test it out. Without reading much documentation I was up and running quickly (nice!) and changing the default template. Then I got cocky and decided to set-up two additional users on my local network.

I created two new users using only two letters for each name and each password since we have no security issues on the local network (firewall/router secures to net). I then changed one of the new users to Publisher and changed my original test user to an editor. The interface immediately changed, removing Publisher options, so I logged out and tried to log back in as the new Publisher. TxP won’t let me in or the other new user (set up as another editor). I can get in with the original user, but it now has only Copy Editor privileges so I can’t fix the new users or add anyone.

I’m guessing TxP needs more than two letters for either pw or user or both, tho I didn’t notice any caveats in the TextBook.

Before I start over, is there an easier way to fix this?

I have quit the browser and MAMP (essentially the apache server) and restarted but that made no diff.

No, it should allow you to use just two characters – though I wouldn’t recommend that for a live site, too easy to crack.

As Els suggested, check that the password is correct by resetting it. Another thing to check is that the user privileges are also correct (” Changing to Higher Permission Status if Accidentally Set Incorrectly”): your “Publisher” user should have a priv of 1, and the “Copy Editor” user should have a priv of 3.

Re: Admin Password Problem

Yes, two letters for user name and password work fine. I followed the instructions in the link, using phpAdmin, and tried various combinations of usernames and passwords. No problem changing anything or relogging in.

But when I tried rechanging passwords from the admin page in Textpattern 4.03, it didn’t work. The user and/or password was flagged on log-in as incorrect. Since there are only two letters in the user name and password, I tried this a few times. Wouldn’t take. But in phpAdmin, no problem. I did see a message on one failed log-on: “Bad cookie” but only once.

I don’t have the time right now to try creating more users in admin and experimenting further but thought I’d mention this in case someone else runs into it.

Also, I want to reiterate to anyone reading this: I’m using two letter usernames and passwords on a local network test install only. And that network is private and protected by firewall. Do not do this outside of a test site. And don’t play with matches…
