Is there an image gallery plugin like this already?

On the homepage of my site I’m going to have a small section for “recent pictures”.

It will look something like:

xxxxxxx
xxxxxxx
xxxxxxx
xxxxxxx

Where the “x” is a picture. These will be small thumbnail images, which will also be a link so when you click it, it takes you to a section of the site where all the images are. So when the thumbnail is clicked, on the next page you’ll maybe see the full size image and then blow that full size image will be the thumbnail previews of every other image.

I’m wanting something that when I go to content>images and upload a new image, it automatically would be added as a thumbnail to the “recent pictures” section of the homepage.

Does this make sense and it is feasible?

Re: Is there an image gallery plugin like this already?

EDIT:

Sorry for the double post, I don’t know what happened. Anyway, I think maybe what I’m asking for those of you I completely confused, is like you see on the blogs today for flickr. Where someone will have their flickr images thumbnailed and then when clicked it takes you to the full size image along with some other recent images off to the side or below or whatever. Only I’d rather not use flickr.

Re: Is there an image gallery plugin like this already?

deron, there’s a good discussion over in this thread

Edit: I did something similar to what you’re asking by using a Gallery called singapore on the hcgtv photo section. It wasn’t tightly wrapped in Nucleus but it got the job done. I plan on doing a more integrated solution with Textpattern.

Re: Is there an image gallery plugin like this already?

You can ask yourself two things to start with: Is it just for images or are they related to other bits of your site? Do you want to comment on them or write something about them?

If the latter, then the photoblog variant with one image per article, a description and comments is the way to go. You can use plug-ins such as wet_article_thumbs or indeed normal txp functions to make galleries out of lots of articles.

Other plug-ins make a gallery out of an image category, for instance rss_thumbpop. You upload and assign to that category and it’s in your gallery automatically.

If it’s just photos you want to do, with perhaps several layers of galleries, you might try something else entirely, such as Photostack, which I like very much. You can style it to look like the rest of your site.

Re: Is there an image gallery plugin like this already?

Thank you everyone for your thoughts and links. From what I’ve read on each one, I think Jakob’s solution will work best for me.

Jakob, there is one thing I’m confused on. Keep in my I’ve not tried this (it might fall into place once I get the site up), but just on the outside looking in, what would I need to do, just create an article where the only content is a single image, and then the wet_article_thumbs plugin will do the rest as far as creating the thumbnails? I think I like this solution the best because it would allow comments. I never really thought about doing this before, but the more I think about it, like it.

Re: Is there an image gallery plugin like this already?

I suggested several different options, so I’ll try and clarify:

Photoblog option: after setting it all up with wet_article_thumb (or something similar) your day to day work in adding photos will involve:

  • upload the image in the image tab, upload the thumbnail or make the thumbnail in the image tab, give it a title, caption, alt-text etc.
  • Create an article whenever you want to make a new photoblog entry. Give it a title, perhaps a short description of the photo, add the image id to the field article image. Allow comments.

Then it will be listed on your overview page with wet_article_thumb (or similar). This is more like a photo diary.

Gallery section option: You set up a particular section of your site to be a gallery and use rss_thumbpop or another similar gallery plug-in (there are several) to display all images in a certain image-category. You can display images as pop-ups or as main image with thumbnails alongside etc. There are other plug-ins to use scripts like lightboxJS. Your day to day work in adding photos will involve:

  • upload the image in the image tab, upload the thumbnail or make the thumbnail in the image tab, give it a title, caption, alt-text etc. AND assign it to the image-category for your gallery.

That’s it – it appears in your gallery automatically but people can’t comment on it.

Neither of the above automatically make the thumbnails, but you can make thumbnails in the image tab when you upload the image.

Separate gallery script: Photostack is not integrated with textpattern. You set up some galleries and upload the large images into those galleries and give them a caption or description. Photostack does all the rest, all thumbnails and intermediate sizes depending upon the template you use, read out EXIF data if you use a digicamera etc. There’s no commenting in photostack.

There are lots of other dedicated image gallery scripts, including Singapore, which hcgtv mentioned (which photostack is derived from) or things like menalto gallery, and some of these do allow commenting on individual pictures.

Re: Is there an image gallery plugin like this already?

Thank you for sorting out the different options you mentioned. I guess I didn’t realize you gave me different options to choose from before, :-).

So, for me, I am thinking a Photoblog will work best. Here is a preview of the site I’m working on and what I kinda want for a section on the home page: <a href=“http://www.deronsizemore.com/picimage.gif”>http://www.deronsizemore.com/picimage.gif</a>

So, with the Photo Blog option, is it possible to have the new thumbnail of the new image automatically show up there in the “Recent Pictures” section of my homepage? Or after I’ve uploaded the image, made a thumbnail, would I have to manually insert the new image to the thumbnail section of “Recent Pictures”?

And last, when I create my article for the photoblog entry, I will have the option to NOT put the article on the homepage right? I’m going to have a blog section also on the homepage, but I wouldn’t want these photoblog articles to show up in that section.

Thanks for all you’re help. I hope I’m not being to big of a pain with this.

Re: Is there an image gallery plugin like this already?

Yes, colak’s description on the page linked is a good way to go. zem_article_thumb should do it much like wet_article_thumb. If you make a section for your photos, then when you make a new article with photo assign it to that section and it won’t appear on the home page.

And, if you want the last six images on your home page, then you can also do that by using txp:article_custom with the section=“photo-section” limit=“6” form=“thumbs” to pull articles from another section onto your homepage.

Off-topic: colak, my mother is currently holidaying in your fair land :-)

Thank All for the help! I think I’ve got what I need to at least get started and get my feet wet. I’m sure I’ll be back in a few months with some questions though. :-)

Thanks

Hi Jakob I hope she enjoys herself. It is over 30 degrees here now.

Lucky her … and lucky you!
I think she’s staying someone near Latchi and not far from the sea so she can cool off whenever she feels like it. Ah holidays sigh.
