make a new article default to 'draft' status?

My reason for wanting to do this stemmed from a problem while using Txp as an events manager.
New articles required a ‘future’ date, but Txp doesn’t allow you to set a custom date the first time you save an article.
I asked if anyone knew a workaround but didn’t find anything.
So I need to save the publish new articles with the wrong date first, then correct it and re-save.

Though it’s only momentary, this will still create some wonky content in the site (& generate potentially misleading RSS?), so it’s good to save as a draft the first time.
I’m OK with that but I’m building sites for people who aren’t as methodical as your average web-builder, so I’d like to build in a safety net incase they forget. And with of a particular client in mind, safety nets are gonna be very useful!

There doesn’t seem to be a plugin or anything in the Resources site to do this… any ideas if it’s possible with a bit of hackerooning?

Ignore this if I’ve misunderstood what you’re after, but… can’t you simply uncheck the ‘set time stamp to now’ box and then enter a custom date, past or future? This will save the article first time with the date you want.
