MyBB Forum integration with TXP?

I’m wondering if MyBB forum software would be able to be integrated with TXP the way that PunBB is able to?

I’m talking about having maybe a section on your homepage where you can have recent forum topics/posts, etc…? I know you can do this with PunBB but can someone tell me what I’d have to do to do the same thing with MyBB?

The website for MyBB is www.mybboard.com.

Re: MyBB Forum integration with TXP?

Sure, anything is possible. PunBB has external.php, which outputs either html or rss. MyBB only has an RSS output file, so you can either use something like Magpie RSS, or create the couple lines of code needed.

Where is your MyBB situated to Textpattern (i.e: what urls are both installed at)?

Well I have neither complete. I have Textpattern installed into the root directory, and was just planning on either installing PunBB or MyBB into the site so that the URL would be something like forums.mysite.com or something. I guess that would be creating a sub domain for it?

Yes. As long as you’re able to include a file from the MyBB folder, integration is possible. With PunBB it’s just slightly less code.

deron,

What kind of integration are you looking for?

I would just put whatever forum you decide on into a subdirectory, call it forum. This way you can add it to your top menu and style it similar to your site so that it looks like a section.

Hi! Really the only thing I’m wanting to do is have a “Recent Forum Topics” section on my homepage. Kinda like a preview of what’s going on over at the forum so maybe to entice people to join. I’ve been working on a layout, which you can see here to kinda see what I’m wanting, nothing really special, I just don’t know where to begin. Anyway, <a href=“http://www.deronsizemore.com/test/index.html”>Here is the site</a>

You can see the section I’m wanting there although this is just a rough html layout.

So you believe it would be better to have it in a subdirectory thus having a URL like http://www.mysite.com/forum rather than a sub domain like http://forum.mysite.com?

Thank you Mary for all of your help! I may still go with PunBB anyway when I start getting into the thick of it. At least that way I know I can get more help here at the forums since from my observation more people use it with Txp. :-)

there are 2 methods to integrate the forum with a txp site.

  • If you use punBB you can use this plugin
  • If it is not, you could use feed2js and follow the instructions on how to call it.

Recently I created a forum for my site on forum.neme.org (site neme.org/main/) and wanted to integrate the 2 parts in a similar way to how I understand your wish is. This thread poses the problems and how I eventually solved mine. The punBB plugin works ok but the feed2js has a problem so I opted for a cron job to to resolve it.

Thank you for the links. I’m not familar with Cron Jobs so that might be something I need to check into if I use MyBB. This seems like more of a hassle than anything. I didn’t realize this would be this hard. I just though put the forum up, throw some code on the homepage for what I wanted and off ya go.

That forum you posted in the “may the best forum win…” post looks very nice. My problem is that when I played around with PunBB it confused the heck out of me trying to dig through the stylesheet to change everything like I wanted. With all of the stylesheets and everythign I couldn’t figure out what went with what and it really just turned me off to PunBB.

I am not familiar with cron jobs either. I found the command to delete the cache after searching the net. I do not know who your host is but many of them offer an interface for cron jobs. All you will need to do is edit the path/to/your/directory and paste it in the cron job command field offered by that interface and alocate the time(s) that command will run.

To set up feed2js is very straight forward (basically you need to upload it to your server… check the instructions). It also offers an interface which helps you generate the code needed (…copy/paste) for the feeds to be visible.

Once you do that, you can have the titles of the active topics in your txp site and the latest txp articles in your forum.
