Re: Web-dev tools.
Whoa, great thread! I can hardly add something that hasn’t been mentioned already. Also found some nice things here :)
A few that I also use:
- Firefox extensions IE Tab, IE View and OperaView
- Typetester, compare fonts for the screen
- Lorem Ipsum Generator
- and of course Browsershots

Re: Web-dev tools.
There are a lot of fantastic resources coming together here.
Icons
- Mark James’ Icons Very nice. Surprised no one has mentioned this yet.
- Feed Icons Just to keep things consistent.
Communication Tools
I guess we should talk to clients sometimes so these might help…

Re: Web-dev tools.
This thread keeps getting better! Here’s a few more additions, more productivity-oriented than webdev-specific
- goScreen – best virtual window desktop manager I’ve tried (see my comparison article)
- Reflex Vision – exposé for windows

Cynthia is a new one for me. Not bad for WCAG.

Re: Web-dev tools.
JamieW,
thanks for the comparison article you wrote – I must have missed that the first time I read your post! Funny I should stumble on it just as I am contemplating a move to Ubuntu desktop :)
All
Not so much webdev, but more project management/collaboration; I have been checking out ActiveCollab (Dreamhost just made it a one-click-install) and like what I see – it’s an open source contender for the 37Signals BaseCamp product. There is also a screencast of it in action. (needs JS enabled to view it.)

Note also that Skype is also a major security risk.

Re: Web-dev tools.
I think this isn’t finished yet…
Under my consideration, the only tools that I need (ON a MAC only), are :
A) An <a href=“http://www.apple.com/macmini/”>Apple</a> and a <a href=“http://www.apple.com/macosx/”>Tiger</a> (With various collected apps of course)
B) A TM <a href=“http://macromates.com/”>swiss Army knife</a> and a <a href=“http://www.consking.com/article/the-bundle-craziness-continued-part-3”>custom made bundle</a>
(With this , neither do I need a lorem ipsum application or any other multitude of apps and switch back and forth between them.)
C) A couple of <a href=“http://textpattern.org/plugins”>plugins</a> and this very Forum
and of course a clear mind, mood and creativity
Occasionaly:
xScope, Mamp , and a decent Hosting Company like TextDrive.
(I saw the other Tools are more windows centric, so these reflect the MAC side, as is now for me.)
regards, marios

Re: Web-dev tools.
We need to open up a basecamp page, so all this can be organized! :P My contribution:
- Opera 9 for development and testing
- View>Style>Emulate Textbrowser (Lynx-like). You could also hit <kbd>Shift</kbd>+<kbd>F12</kbd>, go to buttons>Browser View>Drag Author mode to toolbar.
- XnView for sorting graphics (and photos).
- PSPad has a great “Insert Lorem Ipsum” feature. Saves me a few minutes.
- Uniform Server is an alternative to the multitude of Windows server installs. It’s smaller than XAMPPLite, which is why I chose it.

Re: Web-dev tools.
So how do you guys debug your CSS on IE7?
The Accessibility Toolbar that sort of allows live CSS editing in IE6 doesn’t work (as yet) on IE7.
