Textpattern Pro and Bannister ?
Still following Textpattern’s progress and was a bit surprised to discover on Team Textpattern page there will be a Pro version of txp and also a built-in framework :
Bannister : A clean, simple and smart framework for web applications, built inside Textpattern itself. Available soon for selected client projects.
I am curious what this will mean feature-wise… ???
Textpattern Pro : A content management system based on Textpattern, with additional features and services for web professionals and commercial sites. In development.
Same as above, I know it’s a teaser but I am curious to know more about it…
Anyone has infos ?
(Edit : I realize maybe I should have posted in “Present and Coming Attractions”, not used to the “new” forum structure…)

Re: Textpattern Pro and Bannister ?
And will both be open source like TextPattern and /or free?
Looks like TxP may have caught the one-for-free-better-one-for-pay syndrome characterized by MT, EE et al.

Hi David, how nice to see you once again :)
I guess Zem knows more to tell about TXPBannister and TXP pro.
If you like please join our TXP Prof mailinglist – it is open to everybody working on a professional base regardless what CMS. Yeah, we are ‘all’ going a bit more professional…

Don’t jump to hasty conclusions, especially when you consider your knowns versus unknowns, which don’t match MT or EE at all.
It’s open-source Textpattern with paid support. It means getting paid to develop Textpattern. Which means we can spend more time actually developing it, not just in spare time.

You’d rather development stopped? It’s not a “syndrome”, it’s a solution.
If you have a project for which Bannister or Textpatter Pro might be suitable, Team Textpattern would like to hear from you.
Otherwise, we’ll make more details public when they’re confirmed.

Re: Textpattern Pro and Bannister ?
In the case of EE, Rick wrote it from scratch, it had no resemblance to pMachine. And from the start, pMachine was not open source and required monies to run more than one blog.
In Textpattern’s case, Textpattern Pro would be built on the current code base and will probably use the BSD license, which was mentioned in the Dev blog.
Whatever the future holds, I’m willing to support it. I’ve seen too many projects go away for lack of developer interest after the Open Source honeymoon was over. It takes a lot to create, support and keep enhancing a project, any incentives we can give those involved will only benefit the whole community.

Re: Textpattern Pro and Bannister ?
Interesting.
So will there be a free-non-commercial version with all the knick-knacks, or will there be a free-base version, with the option of paying for extended features? Curious minds want to know.

Re: Textpattern Pro and Bannister ?
I’m particularly interested in this method of helping to move development forward.
I’m a designer, not a coder, and there are times when I’ll be able to contract that out to an individual and other times when it may be more appropriate to give that work as a submission to TXP pro and see what comes of it. I can’t speak for others, but because I’m not “living” off of my design work at the moment, I’m eager to see TXP grow, and I like to support it with my effort and $$ when appropriate.
I think its a creative approach.

Re: Textpattern Pro and Bannister ?
When I readed the annoucement I was surpised too, but I am not lot contributed to the project to ask question about that, but I am curious to listen the futur of textpattern and textpattern pro and is there a code difference between them!
It s logical to earn money on working, I think it s necessary for an open source project to earn money to continue growing up, but the difficult is to find the right way to do that !
But is just an opinion and i repeate i am not a developper and I respect their work and efforts made and still making to improve textpattern!
PS: excuse me for my very bad english

Well, I drop by every now and then :) Ok I did subscribe to the ML, nice initiative !
FYI, I don’t work exlcusively with MODx, even if right now, clients are coming to me because they want it explicitely !
So much so that right now, I have my hands full !! Business is kinda thriving right now :))
Of course I’ll be interrested in any progress regarding txp !

That’s why I said “may”. Just an appearance at this point imho.
It’s open-source Textpattern with paid support. It means getting paid to develop Textpattern. Which means we can spend more time actually developing it, not just in spare time.
That would be nice, and a reasonable extension of the model. I was refering essentially to the pervasive practice in the software jungle of offering a base feature set for free and then charging (often exhrobitantly) for the more feature rich Pro version. I’d just hate to see TxP going down that road.
You’d rather development stopped? It’s not a “syndrome”, it’s a solution.
Not at all. Yes it’s a solution, but so are many things.
In the case of EE, Rick wrote it from scratch, it had no resemblance to pMachine. And from the start, pMachine was not open source and required monies to run more than one blog.
I didn’t mean to imply wither EE or MT were Open source, just the “here’s a stripped down version you can use for free but if you want the goodies your gonna pay” scenario.

Some seem to have taken exception to my comment that it was bad to make money from the project. Not at all – just depends on how one goes about it and like everyone else I’m waiting to see what developes.

Re: Textpattern Pro and Bannister ?
I am slightly curious myself. Not in a negative way, just curious what this means and what we can expect. Might be a good idea to give an expanded explanation to prevent negative views.
