British Wildlife Site

Morning, folks.

This one is still under development, but with a few tweaks and a bit of extra text, it’s getting close to being finished, I think. It’s a site I’m doing for my girlfriend, with hand-drawn clipart of British wildlife. There are three galleries up already – using the excellent prad_image_index, and more to follow.

Any thoughts, suggestions or comments?

Best wishes,

Will

Re: British Wildlife Site

Sweet. Nice start… and nice drawings!
One suggestion: a backbutton from subgallery to overview.

Re: British Wildlife Site

That’s a good plan, alexandra.
I’ll add that in this evening.
Best wishes,

Re: British Wildlife Site

Work on your main menu.
There’s something strange about seeing that space on the left hand side of a hovered button and the little line that appears next to it.

Re: British Wildlife Site

nagarjuna,
a labor of love. Nice.

A couple of thoughts.
I agree with walker, you may think about stretching the background of the menu the whole way across the wrapper.
Also, there is a small space (6 px) to the left of the menu buttons on hover. This feels awkward to me.
in addition, there isn’t an active state on the menu buttons, so its unclear where I am at? Well, its not real unclear, but its good practice to include that. If you have questions about how to do that, there’s a Good article over at Nathan Smith’s sonspring.com.

Also you might think about adding a subtle top and bottom border to the menu or the menu anchor tags (just a slight difference in color to give a gentle quality of depth?

Lastly, I don’t think the grey background does the drawings justice? Perhaps you could take one of the drawings that works as a background and make it a Static background? Even a color used in the in the page varied and repeated in the background would help.

Take it all with a grain of salt and know that above all, its all about learning here.
You’re in a good place to do that. People here tend to be really helpful.

I found this article on design really helpful to remind myself about design recently.

Re: British Wildlife Site

Thanks very much for the comments.
Yes, the main menu could do with some work. I’ll have a bash at it this afternoon. The article on sonspring gives a very neat solution, so thanks for the link.

I’ll also have a think about the background. I don’t want anything too busy – I suspect that using one of the drawings as a static background might be a bit much (it’s a rule in life, I feel, that you can only deal with so many squirrels at one time…) – but at the same time the grey is a little on the dull side.

All the best,

Will
