Combatting Spam in Zem_Contact_Reborn

Hello, folks,

I’ve been having persistent problems lately with spam from my Zem_contact_reborn form. There are only so many penis enhancements a man needs… So do you have any idea how I can put a stop to this? I have installed the pap_contact_cleaner plugin, but that doesn’t seem to help.

Best wishes,

Will

You’d better post this in the plugin thread. That’s where the plugin developers will notice it.

Edit: hmm… someone was so kind to move this, thanks co-moderator? Actually I was thinking about the plugin thread, so related plugin topics won’t be scattered all over the place…

nagarjuna,
I’ve asked the author of pap_contact_cleaner in an email if there is anything else to be done, as I am also getting 4-10 (false inquiries) per day. (spam).

Re: Combatting Spam in Zem_Contact_Reborn

In some Instances there are other factors involved.
For example some spambots would gererate huge lists of all possible combinations of e-mail addresses, that matches your domain.
If you would be on Textdive, you should double check of the following preliminary measures to avoid such thing from the Servers side.

1)Create additional mail user accouts (At those mail boxes select primary e-mail address enabled=no)
2)For the second mail User IMAP account, that you use your contact form in (matching that virtual domain name)
create a couple of Aliases in one of those mailboxes and instead use one of those as the e-mail addresses.

3)Make the names of those alias a very difficult and long combination of words and numbers that it hard to replicate by other programs.

4)Don’t reply with the same e-mail address to your requests, but use another address instead.
5)Let any email forwarded to the addresses, that do not match those alias email addresses automatically bounce back from the Server (Also through webmin)

6) There is probably much more, but I can’t rember all the specifics, all the above is doable from cheap c-panel accounts as well though.

(The above will provide you with some nice fallback procedures, since the first thing you just do is flip to another alias you have set up, and you are done within minutes.)

regards, marios

The spam that goes thru zem_contact_reborn is one that generate huge lists of all possible combinations of e-mail addresses, that matches your domain.
In a worst case of scenario, those spam hits can be so massive that they result host closing your account. This problem is known and it has been discussed and reported many times in the plugin support thread, first reported here.

Hopefully version .18 fixes this issue
