Building a site - statistics, ponderings, design decisions etc

(feel mods free to move/del this)

Lo. As My-First-TXP-Site is beginning to come together, I became curious on some observations..

Templates

How many templates people usually use on a site?

In this corporate-ish site I’m building I have two (default and error) templates. I keep all the functionality in one template and will add other templates only if the new section’s layout and design changes drastically (read: a new style sheet) from the others’.

Currently my main template is about 345 lines long.. What are the reasons to break my huge template to smaller templates? Should I break my default to two templates (default and other-sections)? Or should I go all granular and let each section have its own template? I have 8 sections so far and more to come.

Forms

Just curious here.. How many forms sites usually have? My site has around 60 forms. Though some of them are copies because I like having “sectionFoo_article_list” more than “generic_article_list”. Misc forms like “site_footer” could be pasted to templates but having them separated is handy especially if there will be more templates.. But they do generate more database queries.

Memory usage

Currently with my 50 test posts memory usage is around 3 megabytes. How will this change over the time? Increases with new posts and other content? Any means to control this? Does this relate to template count?
