I just checked in a couple more additions to get rid of the validation warnings (so later CSS additions/changes are easier to check).
On a related note: for some weird reason the CSS validator for version 2.0 and 2.1 is borked (warnings of “You have no background-color with your color” when it is clearly there), but it validates with no warnings against version 3 just fine.

I think it’s more a case of using the shorthand “background:” when you aren’t specifying the other parameters in the tag like URL, position, repeat etc.
When you just want to secify a single parameter it is best to use the proper attribute such as “background-color:”, “background-image”, “backgound-position” as you have now done. :)
