What's The Value Of Demanding An Email Address From A Commenter?
What’s the value of requiring a blog reader to enter an email address before allowing a comment?
There’s an infinite number of bogus email addresses that spammers can concoct that will be accepted, so what’s the deal?
I’m putting together a new Txp site and I’m asking myself that very question.
If someone opts to post an email address, fine. But, why does every blogging tool I know about make it mandatory?

I agree. It provides spammers with more good addresses. The trolls will just put in a fake email address anyway.
I went under advanced preferences on my admin tab and changed the “Comments require user email?” option to no.

It’s not madatory in textpattern. It’s an option for the admin to make it mandatory. It’s also easily possible to remove the email-field from your comment form as well with textpattern.
Why make it madatory? Because some authors like to communicate to their users that they prefer being able to communicate with the people who post comments. Of course you can’t force people to leave their correct mail adress, but making that field mandatory is unmistakable way of letting the commenter know what you prefer.

Well it does prevent spam at least a bit. Many spam bots can bypass that but requiring a name and email before you can post your comment do have also that effect of decreasing purely hostile and idiotic comments made by live, human commenters. :)
