Syntax highlighting in the Admin presentation textarea

Hi,

When one first encounters a new CMS, there’s a bit of a learning curve to the way it implements the presentation layer. Each system is unique, not two do it the same.

In getting used to the TXP way, I’ve had to copy and paste the page templates into a highlighting text editor to better understand the flow of them. This gives me a better handle of where tags are used and what is just plain html. For the most part, users don’t install highlighting code editors, they just want to tweak their sites online.

I came across a Javascript highlighter called Helene while playing around with the Ariadne CMS. This could be made into an admin plugin, I would guess, don’t know enough about how plugins interact with the core.

Just an idea, would make it easier for new users.

Re: Syntax highlighting in the Admin presentation textarea

How would that work? You can’t syntax highlight a textarea.

Mary, this is what someone did in Etomite

Would make a neat plugin I would think.

Re: Syntax highlighting in the Admin presentation textarea

So you don’t actually mean the textarea, rather an iframe, like how wysiwyg scripts like TinyMCE work?

Re: Syntax highlighting in the Admin presentation textarea

They have an online-demo:

http://helene.muze.nl/ariadne/loader.php/helene/demo/

It is not a “real” textarea, but an emulation of one, that lets you write and delete text. Unfortunately (for me on FF1.5) I cannot mark text, cannot copy/delete/move blocks of text and there are some minor display quirks. It could be done as a plugin, though.

Yes, it seems to have it’s issues with the current FF, works a little better with IE.

Helene was just something I found being used in a CMS, but we could use something along the same lines. I’ll keep doing some research, maybe something will turn up.

Re: Syntax highlighting in the Admin presentation textarea

I came across Helene a few months agao and was keeping an eye on it. I didn’t like the way it currently still requires the textarea on the screen, which seemed to be something that was being worked on. The core was being re-written so I was holding off for a release to try to do something with it.

It’s pretty cool though.
