Difference between mod_php and FastCGI (I'm a little confused)

So, I think I understood that running TXP in fastCGI mode makes it faster than mod_php, is it right? How faster? Which mode would you suggest?

And if fastCGI is really faster, how do I enable it (even better if you can give me instructions on a Dreamhost server)?
