profiles and section subscription

Hi everybody!

I was wondering if it’s at all possible to set up user profiles for textpattern.
Also along these lines i was wondering if it were possible to have users “subscribe” to sections. basicly the idea here is that when a new article is posted to a section, everyone on the “subscription” list for that section is sent an email saying that there is a new article in that section and perhaps give a link to the article.

I really only want to know if this is possible (i.e can be done without hacking at the code or anything to messy like that) at this stage. if it is, could you please give me some idea of how to go about this. i don’t want all the answers, but just a push in the right direction would be appreciated.
If i have to hack up some code, then it would be helpful to know this also.
