404 errors, permalinks, upgrade problems
I have to admit right off that I don’t quite know how to ask my question (especially since a friend helped me tremendously with my initial install). But here goes…
My upgrade to 4.0.3 went quite smoothly. The pre-flight diagnostic items were easily understood and I fixed them right up. The textpattern interface itself seems to be just fine. I can see all of my previous articles…
One of the things the pre-flight had me do, however, was to remove all placeholder files (I had a journal, about, and a few others). Those line items are still in the .htaccess file and I wasn’t sure if they should be removed, so I left them (in the .htaccess file, but the placeholder files have been removed).
I also previously used a plug in called ‘low_article_no_discuss’ which, after the upgrade, gave me a couple of error notices but a quick look through the forum indicated that the upgrade took care of the necessity for the plug in, so I reverted the tag back to simple ‘txp:article’ where appropriate.
Before the upgrade, I used a few other plug-ins, namely ‘zem_popup_cat’ and as far as I can tell things look ok. But I haven’t tested it much due to the other, more pressing issues.
My main problem, however, appears to be that permalinks are not being referenced properly. I went through the admin tab and tested every option for permanent link mode with no luck.
All of the above information is for my main page: www.studiozoe.com which is, for all intents and purposes, a photoblog.
That 404 error? Showing up on my journal page, www.studiozoe.com/journal/ (which is also permalinked from the main page from the link “Digressions.”) Strangely, and this is true for the main/root/photoblog pages, the permalinks show up in the address bar of the browser, but then they too end up with the dreaded 404 error when clicked.
Thoughts?

Re: 404 errors, permalinks, upgrade problems
/edit: OK…my .htaccess file is the major culprit regarding those 404 errors. I’m on a mac and apparently the .htaccess files didn’t move over the way they should. So I “upgraded” it manually and a big portion of the site came back.
The thumbnails of photos (which are permalinks) still aren’t showing up as they should. But I believe I’m getting closer. If anyone cares to take a quick look at the site: <a href=“http://www.studiozoe.com”>studiozoe</a> to see what I’m talking about, I would very much appreciate it. Thanks.

The permalinks are fine. It’s the image-adresses which are pretty off.

How are you generating those thumbnail-urls? I think that’s what you need to “fix” or update. What is the real url those thubnail-images are accessible at?

Re: 404 errors, permalinks, upgrade problems
Oj…that is the question of the day!
I use photostack to host the images. Photostack also generates the thumbnails. I’m kind of confused why the “big” image shows up for the permalinks (except that the permalinks are not on the “default” page, rather an “archive” page…)
I simply use the file name (without any extension) in the exerpt field when I create a new article. It would appear that something got broken in the upgrade, but that the big image shows up in the permalinked page is strange to me. But like I said in the beginning, I sometimes have a tough time keeping my head wrapped around all of this.
The real url of one of those thumbnails would look something like this:
http://www.studiozoe.com/photos/storage/thumb-photoblog-<image name>.jpg
The real url of one of the big images would look like this:
http://www.studiozoe.com/photos/storage/normal-photoblog-<image name>.jpg

Re: 404 errors, permalinks, upgrade problems
The excerpt field is not the right thing for this. I assume you upgraded from some really old version?
As you can see excerpts get the textile treatment by default (though you can turn that off per article), which is why there is a <p>
and </p>
around part of your filename (the part that is in the excerpt). When those get url-encoded to be safe in the url you get the above “funny” looking url.
The correct field to use would be one of the custom-fields, for which there is a tag to output them in article-forms very similar to how you do it with the excerpts. Have a look at the textbook-wiki (linked as “Manual” above) to see how you would do that.

Re: 404 errors, permalinks, upgrade problems
Yes, I did upgrade from the version available November 2004. That’s quite old, yes?
OK. Will have a look at the custom fields and report back. Thank you!
