the term "category" showing up in clean urls?
How do I get rid of this?
Whenever I use txp:category_list I get a nice list of categories, but then when I click on any of them, I get urls like:
www.yoursite.com/category/about/
- I don’t want this in my url structure and #2 it doesn’t even work.. as going to that url returns 404.
I have clean urls on, with section/title selected.
Am I not doing something right here? I am totally lost, with this, and several other “issues”.
I am trying to use TP for a rather complex site, and of course trial by fire is key here.. but still, I am well adept at WP, MT, etc…
Please help me.
Thanks!

That is the clean url links for categories. If they return a 404, then any clean url would be doing that. See FAQ.

Re: the term "category" showing up in clean urls?
Thank you mary,
I have a sneaky suspicion that I am not doing things right.
I keep going down one path, and then backtracking, as it does not work the way I intended. LOL
The test site is at: http://pixelsoap.com
If you click the “About Us” link.. you’ll see a sidemenu with two menus. The top one is hard-coded to go the directories where they are, and should be.
The bottom one is generated with: txp:category_list break=“li” wraptag=“ul” parent=“about”
How can I get the “category” out of the links? Is this because of the way that I am doing things here?
I thought I had it down… but I guess not.
Totally lost.
EDIT } they are not quite 404s… just loads the default page.. which I guess is the same as a 404 in this case.
I’ve read the FAQs back and forth, several times… I’ve also spent the last three days reading and searching this forum, but I’ve had very little luck and I am getting frustrated.

You don’t if you continue using that tag and any category listing will show that it is a category in one form or another in the URL whichever method is used. The 404 is interesting. Are the sections that these categories fall within NOT allowed on the front-page (default section)? The default behaviour for category lists in TXP is to use the front-page.
There is a method of making a category list use the same section template that the articles come from but it only works with a certain amount of automation if the articles within the category all come from the same section. You can read the method here and a way of automating the output of a category list here though you only need the part that relates to the categories as opposed to the articles.

Re: the term "category" showing up in clean urls?
Hi thebombsite,
Thank you for your time.
Yes, the sections are not allowed on the front page… as I am not using a front page with anything article related. It is pretty much a static page, just being controlled from within TP.
I have tried several plugins, but I seem to have trouble getting them to work, or they seem far too complicated for what I want.
I guess I need to revisit them and see if there is something I am doing wrong.

Re: the term "category" showing up in clean urls?
No, those aren’t 404s; 404s in Textpattern actually declare themselves as such. Are you using the latest version of Textpattern?
As I mentioned, the “category” part of the url is a built-in clean url, which can’t be changed yet, unfortunately. Using this clean url requires some conditional magic in your “default” page.
You can, however make some partially messy links, like Stuart mentioned. You can do it by hand, or you can try finding a plugin that will do it for you.

Seems to be working now.

yes, I ended up making a link group and then put that in place of the category based link. It fixed the problem, but it’s hard-coding, which I wanted to avoid… but it moves me a lil bit forward this site.. so I will try an re-visit the subject later. (I have a Jan 12th deadline for the launch of this site.)
Thanks again for the insight and time. I am sure I will be posting more questions as I get further in. Hopefully at some point, I’ll be able to return the kindness.
