RIP IE 5.2 for Mac
It seems that it has always been MS policy since 2003 to stop supporting this cumbersome piece of software, but its now official that December 31 is the last day for ‘support’. Yippee.
Given that some MS sites stopped rendering well in IE 5.2 some time ago (try loading msn.com using IE on a mac) this announcement is hardly a surprise.
I don’t think it is time to party quite yet – (reason for partying) – as there will still be some users lingering around – but I hope this is the beginning of the end.

Well if suggesting people stop using a browser that isn’t compliant hasn’t worked, maybe suggesting that they stop using a browser that isn’t supported anymore might. These people tend to think MS can’t do anything wrong. :)

Re: RIP IE 5.2 for Mac
Yes. It’s official now for us webdesigners (Mac or PC) that is is no use anymore to debug for that one. The first signal was given by MS monthes ago when they stopped debugging their own sites for IE 5.2 Mac.
It is also good agument now to ask some sites to get compatible with standards (we have official sites here in france with forms and scripts only compatible with IE) and to tell the lastest ones still navigating with IE, on Mac OS X, to download Mozilla or to upgrade to Mac OS X.
But relashionship between Apple and MS are complexe… Mac Users don’t like MS, but the Mac still needs MS presence… We all search for alternatives to MS Office, but we all know that MS Office Mac must exist. So there is an old fear : MS can stop delivering new versions at any time. We have to remember that MS IE 5 (for Mac OS 9) was considered far better than Windows own version ! And it still have less display bugs than the latest MSIE 6 !
Another example : there are, today, a few fonts considered as 100% web safe… all of them are Microsoft and installed on Macs because of MSIE…

This is my only concern. Will new OSX users, by default, have Georgia, Trebuchet, and the other common MS Web Fonts installed? Will they have a way to install the six new Clear Type fonts MS is issuing next year? It’s my understanding these fonts were installed in a package with Mac/IE, and unless you install Mac/Office, my guess is you won’t have them on a fresh OSX install.

Cleartype fonts won’t be as available as the earlier ‘web fonts’ as their performance is tied to the Cleartype renderer in the new Windows. It does seem that the future will be less bright for specifying cross-browser fonts.
(Mind you, there are plenty of standard Mac typefaces I’d love to be able to specify in my web-pages, so it’s all swings and round abouts I guess—or just sticking with Georgia…)
