Hi datafirm.
i would like to know how you managed to get the Printerfriendly Version working? Is this javascript or a styleswitcher or…?

Hello,
We did try the style sheet switcher that worked in real time on the current page. I felt this took away from the usability of the site though. If you were in print “mode” and you hit the back button you would still be in print mode. If someone did not know how to kill this new “mode” they may become frustrated. So we decided to pop up an _blank ;)
The trick is this: when we detect the Print filter in the URI we have a conditional tag that will switch the print.css stylesheet to me used on media=“screen, projection” etc.

Is this PHP then? Clients asked me for this kind of a Printerfriendly Versionlike yours, but i do not know how to work it out.

Errr doesn’t this printer version thing just defeat the object of the print media type for css??
The whole point of css is that you can write a print css file and then restyle the document for different media types. Therefore no code is required, period. Go to maps.google.com and then do File>Print Preview if you don’t buy it.
Printer friendly links are a thing of the past. If your point is to illustrate that the people using the site are uneducated buffoons, then give them a clue that your clever css is taking care of business for them throughout the site and that they DON’T HAVE TO look around for a ‘print friendly’ link.
Simply writing two stylesheets, one for screen and one for printer is perfectly sufficient as far as I know… (I can see that you have implemented the print sheet so why bother with the links and backward compatible html and inaccessible _blanks just for the stupids?)

Nik,
Actually did you try to print one of the pages? There is a print stylesheet, but in all actuality I am not certain everyone is ready to not have the “printer friendly” link. They are actually the same thing. All I am doing is allowing one to preview the document before its printed. :)
