A more flexible Sorting option for articles within categories/sections

Hi

a truly nice addition (would it be a sane addition?) would be if there’d be a better way to sort articles within a section or category.

As it is now, the options are rather meager when it comes to having a large site (I’m talking a few hundreds and more articles) and have these organized other than by date, posted, author, custom_1 etc. A more flexible way, especially for static txp sites, would be, if there was the ability to sort articles within a cat/sec via dragging an article either up or down to the spot where you want it to appear within your article list hierarchy and later output.

If one has say 100 articles in one category and does not want to sort them by date/posted/modified/author, then the custom field come in handy. The downside, however, is, that one has to enter some form of sorting order manually and for each article as far as I know. So, if I have 100 articles, and the first article has 10, the second article has 11, the hundredth article has 100 in the custom field and I output this via a form and sortby custom field, all is good and well. But what happens when you – at a later point – want to add an article inbetween, say article 5 and article 6? The only way to overcome this is to re-number your articles or set some intervalls at the beginning like article 1 has the number 10, article 2 has the number 14, ergo in case I want to add another article inbetween those two, I still have room for another 3. But it’s not really an elegant way of doing things in imho.

There are some systems that allow for such a flexible drag and drop sorting of articles within categories. Two that come to mind instantly are typo3 (http://typo3.org) and phpwcms (http://phpwcms.de).

Perhaps there already are finer ways of “re-organizing” articles that I’ve simply overseen?

Kind regards,

Maleika

Lots of work, and of limited interest to most users. Sounds like an ideal candidate for a plugin.

Is there such a thing? I’m really looking for a plugin like this!

stm_article_order lets you sort articles by drag-arranging and shifting them into different sections (not categories). It adds a column “position” to the textpattern table, which then can be used by other tags for sorting.
