Test at something other than index.php
When installing textpattern to a site that already exists, can you test the textpattern site at something like index2.php so that you don’t have to overwrite the existing index.php file?

The best way to test, is by using a test-install. Either in a subdirectory or on a different server/domain. You will run into problems and inconsistencies when Textpattern does not “control the directory” (i.e. “has” the DirectoryIndex).
