How complex can Textpattern sites get?

I’ve just taken over maintenance of http://www.motifhomes.com and will also be doing search engine optimisation, which they have never had before. The thing is, the site is pretty naff at the moment for seo and I am wondering about the possibilities of redeveloping it in Textpattern. I would appreciate it if somebody could take a look and let me know what they think are the main stumbling blocks (if any). For example, things like a variable number of images on a property page.

Thanks in advance.

Re: How complex can Textpattern sites get?

Plenty. No offence, but this isn’t a homework service.

FAQ.

Try asking specific questions. Search the FAQ, forum, documentation.

Re: How complex can Textpattern sites get?

I wasn’t asking anybody to do my homework I was simply asking if that sort of site was do’able with Textpattern. I’ve searched the forums and faq’s and haven’t found anything which answers the question one way or another, which is why I asked for opinions.

Maybe I was mistaken when I thought the forums were for people to help each other.

Re: How complex can Textpattern sites get?

Like the FAQ says: pretty much anything is doable in Textpattern.

So, uhh, yes.

I’ve searched the forums and faq’s and haven’t found anything which answers the question one way or another

What question? Like I said, try being specific.

Also, please read the FAQ about asking for help on the forum. Things like using a specific topic title and posting in the appropriate forum will make a big difference.

Did I mention specific?

Re: How complex can Textpattern sites get?

Fair enough, that gives me the answer to my question thanks.

<code>Usually what someone really means when they ask that question is, will someone please tell me how to do this, or can I just click a button and have my site look like this, or perhaps can I do this in the eight hours left before my deadline?</code>

I can assure that the above does not describe the reason for my question, but being new to Textpattern I was unsure whether the site in question fell under the banner ‘pretty much anything’.

Re: How complex can Textpattern sites get?

Antalya is nice, I’ve been there a few times… :)

digicammad, there are plenty of real estate sites done with textpattern. I glanced over the site and nothing striked as being especially difficult to do with textpattern. But then, I don’t know what’s important to you, and I haven’t dug into the site – that’s not what the people here want to do, they are interested in helping with textpattern, not analysing other people’s websites.

These are sites done with Textpattern:

These are some real estate sites done with Textpattern:

http://forum.textpattern.com/viewtopic.php?id=3442

I think that will give you an impression of what people are doing, and help you decide whether yuo want to invest your time in textpattern or not.

Re: How complex can Textpattern sites get?

Txp SEO aspects are good not perfect, out of the box you get:
  • Clean Url’s
  • clean markup ( really depends on your template but you control that)
What you don’t get:
  • meta data (some creative thinking can acomplist that)
  • same content is accessible by multiple urls.
  • real 404 /301 error header ( it might be fixed in the new version)

but txp code and way of work is so nice and clean you can hack away and pretty much do anithing. Someone has more than 2 category support, Somebody else have custom file fields, etc etc.

Re: How complex can Textpattern sites get?

same content is accessible by multiple urls.

The same goes for static sites with plain html files. You can add ?test1=test2 to any html file and thus request the same file with a different uri.
The key is to not link to the same page with different urls…

real 404 /301 error header ( it might be fixed in the new version)

404 headers went into 4.0.1 (available for more than 2 months now), other HTTP status codes even earlier. It was possible that on some configurations the webserver wouldn’t send them, but that has been fixed as well.
