Backup and Restore/Install Templates

I have been learning TP with great interest.

It would seem to me that there should be a simple means to backup and restore a template. As I understand it now, I have to make copies of each existing page, stylesheet and form before I experiment. Then if I want to go back to my previous settings, I must manually copy from all backed up the pages, forms and styles one by one into the default files in the system.

Also, it would be very helpful if there was some way to install a new template. As it stands, every template author must type out manual steps to installing his/her template, “copy this file, paste it to…”, etc. The plugins installation is slick and very neat, includes code, helps, on/off settings. Why doesn’t such a function exist for templates? Would be great if we could have a number of templates installed on the system for testing and then simply select the one to be made active.

Have I missed this? Is there a plug in that does the job?
