Why not use pure CSS dropcaps instead? Sure, they don’t work in IE, but they also don’t conflict anything in IE either.

I am serving a small community of people who will not butt out and download firefox or opera even if “Mahatma Gandhi” advised told them to download it. I am forced to find alternatives because my design sucks without dropcaps. Hope you understand my position.
