It’s a movable target as far as what’s out there & what’s sensible, but we can use Wordpress telemetry as a guide: en-gb.wordpress.org/about/stats/

Yeah, totally. We can assess it as things move on. But I think support for 5.x is pointless now. It’s holding us back from retooling things and using more efficient code.

100% agreed. I’d even go as far to say PHP 7 will become nearly pointless if Textpattern 5 is some years away. ETA: PHP 7.4 has been out of security support for about three years as of now, and if Textpattern 5 is 3 years away then we can safely assume much more recent versions are as good as ubiquitous. ETA #2: PHP 5 went out of support around 7 years ago, for comparison.
