New AVIF images format

After WEBP, here is the new AVIF images format for the future (currently not implemented within browsers market): https://jakearchibald.com/2020/avif-has-landed/

Re: New AVIF images format

Looks promising, but we are hold by PHP getimagesize() function incompatibility (even with WEBP) in pre-7.1 versions. Time to switch to something more recent, either PHP or image library.

Re: New AVIF images format

WebP is finally in Safari 14 (which released yesterday) so it’s definitely something we will be adding as part of Image Intervention plans. Obviously AVIF will have to wait.

Re: New AVIF images format

Good to know WebP is on the Textpattern horizon.

AVIF may take less time than WebP to be adopted.

Safari on IOS 14 and Safari 14 running on macOS 11 (big sur) only… not on 10.14 and 10.15.

Not sure why all that enthusiasm about the AVIF format is, as far as I can see it is just derivative from the HEVC/H.265 codecs (e.g. Apples HEIC image format but improved and start standardised).

Oh, that’s good to know regarding Safari 14 WebP. Makes it less useful short-term.

Yeah I’m not that impressed by AVIF, much more interested in the next-gen JPEG formats coming soon.

The codecs and assorted support/decoding libraries are build deep down in the OS, not inside Safari it self, thus macOS 11 and iOS 14 only.

I tried out the Squoosh webapp linked in the original blogpost. Happy International Talk like a Pirate Day!

Original – 1.53 MB

MozJPEG 800 × 600 – 45.8 KB

AVIF 800 × 600 – 22.57 kb

This threw me today, and I’ve just figured out why – so thanks for the pointer. I was trying to share an image over Signal, and it just wouldn’t send, either inline (pasted) or attached. Worked OK before. It turns out that WebP works just fine with iOS Safari, and WebP files are shown just like any other web bitmap, but something in Signal isn’t quite there. It can render the image at the sending side, but attempting to send it just errors out and immediately clears the error so it’s not immediately clear what went south.

The face appears slightly redder with AVIF but the quality is indeed impressive.

Just out of curiosity, I exported your image to HEIC format: 35kb for a 800×600px image. I can’t see much if any difference with the original. I used Acorn web export for this.

You can find it here. You may need a Mac or an iOS device to view, though.

ps – without knowing the (exact) export settings used for your images, I ventured a guess…

Re: New AVIF images format

My go-to tool for image conversion is XnConvert – it has good file format support, can batch process images really well, and when you get your head around the workflow it’s quite powerful.
