Thanks both. That is indeed what I suspected, the special casing for the .dev
TLD happens deep down in the system libraries, which (of course) only affects macOS 10.13 and up.
Conclusion of the thread – if you want to set up local development domains, use .local
or .test
as a TLD. (yes it annoyed me when I moved to a new Mac that came with 10.13, as I needed to updated all my local sites and train Safari’s URL auto complete. That went fast, but still…)
