Re: Textpattern CMS demo site
PHP 8.0 Alpha 2 landed today. It’s compiled and running on a couple of the “Here Be Dragons” demo sites. I’m almost done with the landing page rebuild, when that’s ready I’ll tell you more.
I’m expecting an Nginx update later today, and there’s an outside chance PHP 7.3.20 & 7.4.8 will also be updated.

Re: Textpattern CMS demo site
I’ve had a notification from DigitalOcean that the demo site server is having some emergency maintenance now since the physical machine it’s located on is not performing correctly. Expect some turbulence, and a possibility that I might have to rebuild the server elsewhere if the maintenance is not 100% successful.
Start: 2020-07-24 07:00:00 (UTC)
Hello,
We have identified an issue on the physical machine hosting one or more of your Droplets, which are listed below. In order to minimize disruption, we will be migrating the Droplets to a healthier physical machine. Throughout the migration, Control Panel and API events – including: power offs, resizes, and attempts to destroy the Droplet – will not succeed for the affected Droplet(s).
In order to minimize downtime, we will attempt to perform live migrations in all possible cases. A live migration would result in no downtime, but minor performance decreases in disk I/O and a second or less of packet loss as the network is switched over to the new physical host.
In the event that we are not able to perform a live migration of a Droplet, we will perform an offline migration during which the Droplet will be powered off and migrated offline during the window.
We apologize for any inconvenience and will be happy to answer any questions or concerns – simply reply to this email or open a support ticket on your account.
Best Regards,

Re: Textpattern CMS demo site
I’m nearing completion of the demo server landing page rebuild, which is behind schedule due my work situation and brain chemicals not being quite right.
I’ve decided to focus on improving the image and file corpus after this overhaul, so medium term you should expect a set of demos with no content (i.e. identical to the Textpattern releases), and another set with a standard collection of safe for work images and files, hopefully in the order of hundreds of images across various types and a much richer selection of file downloads.

Re: Textpattern CMS demo site
Also, today marks the feature freeze of PHP 8.0, so we can start looking closer at the pre-release builds of that and see how Textpattern works on it.

So, should we expect txp v5 to be developed with php8 in mind?

I would anticipate Textpattern 4.9 to have PHP 8 support, but since there are still hosts running PHP 5 I am not hopeful for rapid PHP 8 adoption.

I was relating my question to this concern which will double our devs workload if they do adopt the project. I’m not following the php 8 developments but what I am wondering is whereas additional tools for images will be part of the upgrade.

Image handling is above my pay grade, but I’m reassured with Stef’s follow up feedback – there are many tools out there that could be repurposed, so I would respectfully say don’t worry. We are a way off from 4.9, there’s a lot to do in various areas.
PHP 8 will arrive by the end of this year, regardless of what happens in Textpatternworld. I know the dev branch has a few minor hiccups with PHP in its alpha release state, but since today is feature freeze we can start to take a closer look.

Man, you are on it!
Thanks. PHP has a reliable schedule – releases arrive in GitHub php-src on Tuesdays, and each point release has an RC a week or fortnight before. Sometimes the RC release has a week, but that’s rare. So, when an RC lands, I make a note to expect the final release two weeks later. I’ve got an Atom (syndication) feed from the GitHub releases and my reader updates ~60 feeds every 5 minutes, so assuming I’m at my desk I can see it quickly. If I’m out, I get an IFTTT alert from that same feed (albeit later in the day) so I know I need to look when I get back. Jump into Atom (editor), bump the line with the source code version number, log into test server, recompile from source to make sure it doesn’t explode (it doesn’t), then update demo server, then after a grace period I update Textpattern main production server and my other production servers.
And that’s what Pete does on Tuesdays.
