Yes yes I know! All good points, but the web has moved on and so do we I think. If a given solution doesn’t work why not look for a new one? Its not as if we are tied in to one or another, its easy enough to change.
I have a gmail account partly because I need a Google account for Analytics, so adding Google+ was in turn easy, although I only use that to keep track of the Textpattern Google+ page (from time to time).
Point being – if ZCR doesn’t provide for what we need then why not look elsewhere for a solution.

Is there any mileage in adding dnsbl.tornevall.org as a spam blacklist, as mentioned here on StopForumSpam?
