Re: Joyent cancels lifetime hosting in October. New host recommendations?

Are crosswinds still around? I remember when they were a free host and had a small account there. Was decent as I recall.

Their front page is an immediate turn off for me (Unlimited Raid Web Space, Unlimited Traffic Bandwidth). It just screams “oversold beyond capacity”. They also need to either update their servers or their website (Apache 1.3.37, Postgresql 7.4.3, Mysql 4.1.2, PHP 4.4.7). YMMV.

I can also recommend A Small Orange . Satisfied customer for 6.5 years and volunteer forum moderator. There have already been a few current Joyent folks on the forum there.

Re: Joyent cancels lifetime hosting in October. New host recommendations?

Yes, they are still there. They have consistently upgraded their servers and software for php, etc. I’ve been there with an account for around 10 years. I haven’t had any bandwidth or web space issues in all those years.

My cpanel page for my domain shows:

Apache version 2.2.22
PHP version 5.2.17
Perl version 5.8.9
Kernel version 6.4-STABLE
cPanel Pro 1.0 (RC1)

I did some checking, their PostgreSQL server is not in use.

And remarkably Dean just posted this on the Joyent thread:

__Hi, good to see everyone.
Steps are being taken to relaunch TextDrive as a separate company, run by me, with services, promises, early investment and good faith intact, running on hardware not powered by drunken late-summer wasps, with a future more dominant than a past.
Details are to follow, we’re still out hammering them; please don’t pepper support with questions!
Provided this goes ahead, I expect to have an official announcement sent out Monday 27.
Up yer very handsome kilt,
- dca__

And the $400 question is, will it require another investment or do the life-timers get rolled over and new investments made available?

Re: Joyent cancels lifetime hosting in October. New host recommendations?

This from the “Ex-TextDrivers” Google group… It’s a Joyent reply to a support ticket request for the refund of a lifetime account.

“Thanks for getting in touch. The option in Dean’s email replaces the
options from jason’s email so this is the option that is now available to
you. The lifetime accounts will continue so no refunds are available.”

I never received an email from Dean. But maybe “email” isn’t what they meant.

Whether Dean voluntarily stepped up, as this GigaOm article suggests, or Jason ‘sweet-dealed’ Dean back into business, of sorts, to help with the fallout, one thing can be said for sure, this is probably the textbook example of abysmal communication around a corporate decision.

But I’m damn happy to see Dean get back in action. I’d rather fly the Jolly Roger than the Union Jack. (And I’m happy to not have to move all my shit around, at cost.)

What would be the benefit of going for the Cloud VPS over the Simple Hosting? It seems a more expensive option that doesn’t offer as much in terms of hosting capability (storage capacity and bandwidth allowance).

I guess it is the exclusively allocated ram and bandwidth, but what I am looking for is a place where I can host many sites under one price rather than pay on a per site basis. Currently looking at dreamhost.

In theory VPS is also safer (please somebody correct me if I’m wrong here)

My domain at crosswinds.net allows multiple sub-domains under one domain. Or where you looking for several domains under one price ? Crosswinds doesn’t do the second one.

Re: Joyent cancels lifetime hosting in October. New host recommendations?

@JimJoe – If you’re referring to Gandi’s “Simple Hosting” on PaaS structure, it does exactly that; you create a single account and can host multiple Virtual domains underneath it, just like Joyent provided. They haver servers in both the US and France, so you have you’re pick of location and currency. :) According to Gandi

That’s what I would be moving to if Dean/TextDrive hadn’t come back into the picture.

Re: Joyent cancels lifetime hosting in October. New host recommendations?

@Destry – I would have done the same i.e move to Gandi since I have my domains registered there. But it is not so simple with Gandi, for example it is not easy to perform certain tasks like cron jobs or adjust php.ini (as far as I know). Otherwise it appears to be a great service.

Avoid anything running Plesk like the plague. We have it only both our web servers and if anything goes wrong, it’s usually down to Plesk screwing around with the config files or it doing a bad update.

+1. The complexity and fragility of it boggles my mind.

I’m running a Media Temple (DV4) for most of my stuff. It’s Plesk-powered, and I’ve become accustomed to its foibles, but it does the job for Textpattern right out of the gate.
