I’m not an expert. But regarding your first url question: it’s my understanding and experience that having descriptive words or key words in the url does help seo. But as has been said above you would go straight back in the sand box if you changed it outright. However if your host supports symbolic linking than you could use both urls and wait till the new one surpassed the old one in rankings before deactivating it. I have done this.

jstubbs, there was a detailed article on seomoz about switching your domain name with an emphasis on SEO retention. It has some great advice on the tactical steps of actually doing it.
