They are natively built-in, but there’s no user interface – that’s the realm of plugins as most use cases include more than just increasing the number anyhow.

Do I understand you correctly that the unlimited fields feature is “hidden” in the admin and all we get in a standard install are the 10 usual fields.
And we would still need Gerhard’s plugin to go past the 10-limit?
