If that is the case (my host… :( ), I suppose there is no other way a plugin could backup the db? I can work with phpMyAdmin, but I’d rather not send most clients in there.

Well the plugin could try and backup the way phpMyAdmin does (it uses pure PHP+MySQL and not mysqldump). I’m thinking that it could be a preference where you could choose how the backup is made. mysqldump is best because it’s faster and more efficient, but if it’s not available…
