ok so plenty of cups of coffee later i found that i was somehow dragging a duplicate config file one folder up from the textpattern core. i was so concerned with this dupe that wasnt even doing anything that it was enough for me to do damage to my main site, as well have plenty of difficulty getting my first local site up and running, which it is now.

and also for anyone having trouble getting apache in xampp running, i have found that the problems start when you begin to muck with your virtualhosts settings. check all your syntax carefully cause that green light will either flip on or it won’t. granted i bet it wont turn on it tomorrow for me and i’ll be back to square one ;-)

EDIT: however the different sections of my site on the nav bar are now broken links. :-( the main blog page works locally though which is a big step.
