You’ll have to use the section attribute in your links to category pages, like this:
<txp:category link="1" section="..." />
or
<txp:category_list section="..." />
so the category pages will use the section’s page. Leaving this attribute out will always show the category lists on the default page.

Let me be sure I’ve got this straight: a link to your section “archive”, to display categories for the section “journal”? You will need a plugin for that, I believe, such as cbs_category_list.
