The debian-31r2-i386-netinst.iso is what you should burn, it will install a base system and fetch what you need like Apache, MySQL, PHP, etc.

Installation went nice under parallels with Sarge kernel 2.4, although some hardware doesn’t get detected ( Missing Drivers)
The biggest hurdles that I encountered, where A) the not so very good documentation of parallels, so I felt beeing a little on my own, to setup the VM first B) finding a suitable mirror and downloading the ISO (many timeouts).
I also found, that I can only work on a VM in full screen mode and not in VM console mode (strange)
C) The sometimes confusing installation options in the Debian setup GUI’s
I opted for Desktop install, that gave me a command prompt but no GUI, so I choose the easiest method
logged in as root and selected Desktop only using tasksel for the beginning.

I’ve heard that the Gnome and KDE are not so good with Debian, however, that would be of lesser importance, what I mostly want for
now is to use it, so I can access ext3/ journaled filesystems, which I couldn’t with my old Knoppix Disk.

However, all in all quite an adventurous experience.

@hcgtv

I assume, I can install Apache and mysql on a Desktop Sarge Install, can I ?

What about your WD USB Disk, can you confirm that it it spinns down after a while when no read and write access ?

The only difference between a Desktop and a Server is that in a desktop you decide to install X and a desktop environment. So yes, you can install any Server processes that you’d like – apt-get is your friend ;)

I can’t confirm the spin down on the USB drive cause it’s in my safe now, I just hooked it up to do a backup of the server.

Since you’re building VM’s, try a Debian Etch one and see if it recognizes more of the hardware.

To start your desktop environment, sign on as a regular user, key in startx.

thanks,That’s good to know, The desktop installation finally failed, when I came back.
I was to lazy to write down an estimate of the final disk size amount, which was too small to accomodate the rest of the packages, and allthough I had created a dynamic disk to expand as needed, Parallels won’t let me change the disk size any more.
However starting again now from scratch with Etch.

(Sounded like chinese too me when I first red about it on debian.org)
I like the fact that I can see the download speed right from the console window, when getting packages.

Re: XAMPP on external drive: mapping trouble?

After upgrading to Parallels beta 2.2 everything went much better.
For Debian Etch I choose the Expert GUI install,(allows you to make screenshots also of the install routine to provide for later reference) which is a nice improvement to the previous version.
However, it makes more sense to make Host Systems only OS-X/ Linux and
Windows only Guest OSes and clone these right after install for also for Safety and Backup, then also
Various IE versions Browser testing becomes a snap with cloning.
