Re: How hard for end user?
So it sounds like Textpattern is best for me to use for my own site… but if someone saw my site and said “Hey, great site! Can you develop one for me?” that it would be best to use something else that would be easier for them to maintain?

From my experience non technical end users (clients) find the textpattern interface a little confusing. There in no way to remove the bits of the interface they don’t need. This is especially true on the Write tab which is very busy…

As a personal experience (for what it’s worth)… I got more after job questions with wordpress installations than textpattern installations.
Was there a difference in the kinds of things you were asked about between the two?
But if a client is simply going to be updating existing content then txp is a breeze. If client is going to be adding new content the you will need to take in to account several hours of hands on training when you estimate your job out. (The same as any new software)
After the training would they be likely to grumble about how dificult it is to work with?

Thanks for the info Mary.

bq. Yeah, but unless I missed something Textpattern doesn’t have a WYSIWYG editor.
There are a couple plugins that add that feature.

Re: How hard for end user?
Thanks for the info. How much training did they require?

I have a couple of clients who use TXP for their content and I have had no problems or issues at all.

Re: How hard for end user?
Very helpful. Thanks.

If you’re after a WYSIWYG editor there is a decent plug-in called hak_tinymce WYSIWYG article editor. It allows you to place a toolbar(s) similar to Microsoft word on the write tab. Anyone typing or editing an article can then just use this for formatting and it converts the contents to html behind the scenes.
…
Hope this helps.

Not much. It depends on the person. If they are lacking in computer experience, anything would be difficult. Its not hard to learn if the client is keen to add content to their site.

You know, you could do what most of us do, florida_guy, being a “developer” and all, you could install Textpattern somewhere, locally for example, set up a site to play around on with a few plugins and so forth, and see for yourself. You can ask all the questions under the moon (and your getting close) but the opinions of others, however helpful, are still somewhat relative until you see it for yourself and make the call.
That’s not meant to be snide, I’m serious. I have several different systems installed locally just for that reason. If you wait long enough for all of our opinions, you’ll hear every side of the Rubik’s cube and get nowhere. It’s like listening to Roger and Ebert about a movie (that’s an American thing, folks); until you see the movie yourself, you’ll never really know for sure.
(Where’s Davidm when you need him? Oh yeah, over at ModX now.)

Which is exactly what I intended to do this weekend until last night when I found out that I my sister’s family was coming down to visit.

It is the questions about how the end user will like the finished product that I wouldn’t find out until I was commited though.

It’s funny that this comes up now because I had come to that same conclusion myself earlier this week. I always like to get those conflicting opinions though to make sure that I’ve considered all the issues.

Let me ask this a different way. Is there anyone who has built a site using Textpattern that has passed on the content maintenace of the site to a non-technical person?
A couple of times, yes. For the most part they’re happy with it although issues do pop up from time to time.
Be prepared to support the client.
