I tried changing rss.php using the above example and I get an error, something about malformed xml. So there must be something else that needs to be adjusted for this to work.

Just noticed that Alicson also serves the RSS feed as text/xml on the resources site.

Also, what the difference between http://textpattern.org/?rss=1 or http://textpattern.org/rss/ like the default template has it?

One is clean urls, the other is messy.
