I suppose it’s not possible to make the default value for category1 in the database <txp:section />…? Or else maybe the PHP equivalent (which I don’t know)?

part of what I am trying to do in general is limit the amount of training time I have to spend with clients, a solution for a small site like this which requires next to no assignment for anything other than section.
Like I said above, I can do all this via if_section stuff, its just fun to try to find better ways.
