Just for the record – in case anyone else has the same problem – a lack of GD Freetype support in your PHP installation will cause zem_ir to generate a blank page (i.e. zero byte).

Use the info="1" attribute to display debug information to determine whether you have Freetype or not (or use phpinfo();).

The problem will only manifest itself if zem_ir has to regenerate the text image – if it has been cached previously then you won’t see any issues.

Does this plug-in work in the current Textpattern version? Can I upgrade a older site where this plug-in is used?

Yes, I am still using it on a 4.4.1 site.
